  • 09.00 – 10.00 Competition Law Roundtable. Overview: A discussion of the private enforcement of antitrust laws in the United States, recent developments concerning private damages actions in the European Union, and the implications for companies doing business internationally.
    Speakers: Mr. Richard Voelbel, partner at Zelle, Hofmann, Voelbel & Mason LLP. (Minneapolis Office) Mr. Voelbel has over 30 years of complex commercial litigation experience in courts around the United States. In addition, over the past 20 years he has been involved in a wide variety of domestic and international alternative dispute resolution matters, both as arbitrator and counsel. Areas of particular experience and interest include complex business disputes, commercial property insurance and reinsurance, class actions, securities, professional liability and ethics. Mr. Voelbel serves as a claims officer for a Bermuda-based insurance company. Mr. Voelbel has also served as Regional Counsel for extra-contractual claims on behalf of a major property/casualty insurance company, as outside general counsel on insurance matters for a fortune 500 company, and as outside counsel for a major reinsurance intermediary. Mr. Voelbel has also served as a New York Stock Exchange arbitrator, an ARIAS arbitrator, an AIRROC arbitrator, an AAA arbitrator and as guest speaker to industry groups on the subject of commercial arbitration and other aspects of alternative dispute resolution. Don Jose M. Umbert, associate at Zelle, Hofmann, Voelbel & Mason LLP. (San Francisco Office) Mr. Umbert practices in a variety of litigation and arbitration matters. He has experience in complex first-party property insurance and reinsurance matters, domestic and international antitrust cases, commercial contract disputes, and class actions.
  • 11:30 – 12:30 Investment Banking Activities round table. Overview: Mergers and acquisitions and financial advisory services to public and private companies throughout the United States. Speakers Mr. Eric Nicholson -Managing Director- at Greene Holcomb & Fisher LLC. (Minneapolis Office) Mr. Nicholson has over 15 years of experience in mergers and acquisitions, advising clients on more than 100 transactions ranging from $10 million to $2.0 billion in transaction value. Prior to joining GH&F, he was a senior member of the Mergers and Acquisitions Group at Piper Jaffray. Prior to that, he practiced corporate law at Dorsey & Whitney in Minneapolis, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, public and private securities offerings and venture capital. Mr. Nicholson’s clients have included 3M, Mattel, TRW and Remmele Engineering. Buyers and other parties involved in transactions with his clients have included Affiliated Computer Services, Thomson Reuters, WPP Group, Morgenthaler Partners and Torquest Partners.
  • 14.30 – 16:00 Visit to the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis guided by the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary, Mr. Neil Willardson. Mr. Willardson has been with the Bank since 1990 and has worked in several leadership positions in the Bank, serving as a manager in the Banking Supervision Department, department officer in Human Resources, and managing officer in the Banking Supervision Department. In 2000, he joined the Bank's senior management team and served as senior vice president over Supervision, Regulation and Credit for eight years. Mr. Williardson was named general counsel in 2005 and corporate secretary in 2009. In addition to his Reserve Bank responsibilities, Mr. Willardson serves as an adjunct law professor at the University of Minnesota law school, where in 2010, he was the inaugural recipient of the Stanley V. Kinyon Adjunct Teacher of the Year Award. Mr. Willardson received his bachelor's degree from South Dakota State University and J.D. degree from the University of Minnesota.
